The Process of Recognition as a Bereaved Family

What is the recognition process and how to submit an application?
The recognition process as a bereaved family is carried out through an official application to the Department of Families and Commemoration. Families that are recognized are eligible for benefits, services and support. The required forms and documents vary depending on the circumstances:
Fall or passing in service
For families of those who served in the IDF, police, prison service or security forces and fell or passed away during their service.
Death of disabled veterans
For families of recognized disabled veterans who passed away as a result of their recognized injury, or their disability degree was high.
Death not during service
For families of those who were not recognized as disabled - when the family believes there is a connection between the death and the service.
Recognized bodies
The application is intended for families of those who served in one of the following bodies:
- IDF - mandatory, permanent or reserve service
- Disabled veterans who passed away due to their disability
- Israel Police - including the Border Police
- Underground organizations in the Land of Israel
- Candidates for military service during tryouts or courses
- Israel Prison Service (IPS)
- Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet)
- Fallen of the SLA in South Lebanon (their families in Israel)
- Knesset Guard
- The Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations (Mossad)
Stages of recognition
Application submission
Fill out the application forms and submit them along with the required documents
Application review
A benefits officer examines the application and the connection between the death and the service
Response and recognition
You will receive a detailed written decision. If approved, guidance begins and rights are exercised
Under what circumstances is eligibility approved?
The Recognition and Eligibility Unit in the Department of Families, Commemoration and Heritage operates under the Fallen Soldiers' Families (Pensions and Rehabilitation) Law, 1950 (hereinafter: "Families Law"). Its role is to determine whether the criteria for recognizing a fallen soldier and the family member for whom recognition is requested are met.
The law recognizes family members who lost their loved ones in the following circumstances:
