What is the recognition process and how to submit a request?
The recognition process as a bereaved family is carried out through an official request to the Department of Families and Commemoration. Families that are recognized are eligible for benefits, services, and support. The required forms and documents vary depending on the circumstances:
Death or passing during service
For families of those serving in the IDF, police, prison service, or security forces who fell or passed away during their service (mandatory, career, or reserve).
Death of a disabled IDF or security forces veteran
For families of those who were recognized as disabled IDF veterans during their lifetime and passed away as a result of their recognized injury or had a high disability rating.
Death not during service
For families of those who completed their service, were not recognized as disabled, and passed away—when the family believes there is a connection between the death and the service.
Recognized bodies
The request is intended for families of those who served in one of the following bodies:
- IDF - mandatory, career, or reserve service
- Disabled IDF or security forces veterans who passed away due to their recognized disability
- Israel Police - including Border Police (Magav)
- Underground organizations that operated in Israel for its independence
- Candidates for military service during tryouts or courses
- Israel Prison Service (IPS)
- Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet)
- SLA - those who perished in South Lebanon (their families in Israel)
- Knesset Guard
- The Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations (Mossad)

Submit a request
Fill out the application forms and submit them along with the required documents
Application review
A benefits officer examines the application and the connection between the death and the service
Receive a response and rights
You will receive a detailed written decision. If recognition is approved, personal guidance and rights implementation begin
Under what circumstances is eligibility recognized?
The unit for recognition and determination of eligibility in the Department of Families, Commemoration, and Heritage operates under the Military Cemeteries Law, 1950 (hereinafter: "Families Law") and is responsible for determining eligibility for burial in military cemeteries and for the commemoration of fallen soldiers in accordance with the law and the department's mission to honor their memory.
